Type/Size

Luggage types and sizes, and who each one is for

Suitcase ranges are normally built around three decisions: cabin or checked, hard or soft, and single case or set. Cabin sizes are the ones that have to clear individual airline limits, so they are the tightest constraint in the range. Checked sizes trade that constraint for capacity. Sets combine two or three of those sizes into one retail unit and are usually the strongest listing on a marketplace.

Where the sizing risk sits

The risk is not the case, it is the cabin allowance. Airlines measure overall dimensions including wheels and handles, and the limits differ by carrier and by cabin class. A model that passes on one airline can fail on another, so cabin models are usually tooled to the tightest common allowance rather than to a single carrier.
