A collapsible case carries its own hinge line. The shell is built as panels joined at a flexible spine, so it lies flat when nothing is inside and stands into a full-depth case once packed. When the case is full the load runs through the hinge and the two fold panels, which is why panel thickness and hinge construction decide how the case behaves over time.
