Structure
Luggage structures compared
The structure is what holds the case together, and it decides how the case opens, how it packs and how it behaves when it is full. Zipper structures are the lightest and the cheapest to produce, and they flex under load. Aluminum frames replace the zipper with a rigid frame and two latches, which holds shape but adds weight and cost. Front-opening structures put the lid on the face of the case so a laptop or document sleeve can be reached without laying the case flat. Wide-trolley structures spread the pull load across two rails. Collapsible structures fold flat when empty to cut storage and freight volume.
Matching structure to the channel
Zipper and hybrid builds usually win on price-led marketplace ranges. Frame builds and front-opening builds carry more margin in specialist and business channels, where the buyer is paying for the opening mechanism rather than for capacity.

| Aluminum frame | Replaces the zipper with a rigid frame and two latches: holds shape, but adds weight and cost. |
| Front-opening | Puts the lid on the face of the case, so a laptop or document sleeve can be reached without laying the case flat. |
| Wide-trolley | Spreads the pull load across two rails. |

Matching structure to the channel
The channel usually decides the structure before the hardware does:
| Channel | Structure that usually wins |
| Price-led marketplace ranges | Zipper and hybrid builds. |
| Specialist and business channels | Frame builds and front-opening builds - they carry more margin, because the buyer is paying for the opening mechanism rather than for capacity. |
