Here's a conversation I've had at least a hundred times:
"We want polycarbonate luggage. That's the good one, right?"
Yes. And no. And it depends entirely on what you mean by “good.”
Most importers walk into sourcing conversations with one material preference and zero understanding of the trade-offs. They've read that PC is “premium” and ABS is “budget” and that's where their analysis ends.
That's not analysis. That's a marketing slogan you inherited from a luggage brand's product page.
Let me give you the version that actually matters — the one based on 15 years of watching these materials go through injection molding machines, drop tests, and temperature chambers.
The Three Shell Materials, Actually Explained
ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene)
What it is: The workhorse of the luggage industry. ABS has been the dominant hardshell material for 30+ years. It's a terpolymer — three monomers that each contribute something: acrylonitrile for chemical resistance, butadiene for impact strength, styrene for rigidity and surface finish.
What suppliers will tell you: "Durable and affordable."
What they won't tell you: ABS gets brittle at low temperatures. If your container spends two weeks crossing the North Atlantic in January, ABS shells can crack on impact at rates that will terrify you. I've seen entire shipments where 15% of shells showed hairline cracks after cold-weather transit — all ABS, all within spec at the factory.
Best for: Value-tier luggage sold primarily in warm climates. Short-haul travel. Promotional and corporate gift luggage where price per unit is the overriding concern.

PC (Polycarbonate)
What it is: An amorphous thermoplastic with exceptional impact resistance and transparency. PC luggage was pioneered by Samsonite in the early 2000s and has since become the gold standard for mid-to-premium hardshell luggage.
What suppliers will tell you: "Premium material, lightweight, virtually unbreakable."
What they won't tell you: Not all PC is created equal. There's virgin PC (Bayer Makrolon, SABIC Lexan) and there's recycled PC — and the quality gap between them is wider than most importers realize. Recycled PC can vary batch-to-batch in melt flow index by 20-30%, which means your shell thickness won't be consistent from one production run to the next. Also, PC scratches more easily than ABS — that glossy showroom finish won't survive one baggage handler.
Best for: Mid-to-premium luggage. Any market where cold-weather durability matters. Brands that compete on warranty terms (PC lets you confidently offer 5-10 year warranties).
FOB price range (carry-on): $14–22 per unit (shell only, virgin PC).
PP (Polypropylene)
What it is: A semi-crystalline thermoplastic that's been gaining traction in the last 5 years. PP is lighter than both ABS and PC and has excellent fatigue resistance — it can be flexed repeatedly without cracking.
What suppliers will tell you: "Ultra-lightweight and flexible — the material of the future."
What they won't tell you: PP is harder to mold with a Class-A surface finish. You will see flow lines. You will see sink marks near rib sections. If your brand's aesthetic is 'flawless glossy shell,' PP is not your material. Also, PP has poor paint and coating adhesion — custom colors and metallic finishes are significantly harder to achieve than on PC or ABS.
Best for: Ultra-lightweight luggage lines. Checked luggage where weight limits matter more than surface finish. European and Asian markets where lightweight travel gear is trending.

The Question Nobody Asks (But Should)
"Which material is right for my market?"
This is the only question that matters, and the answer has nothing to do with material specs. It has everything to do with:
- Where your customers travel. Middle East and Southeast Asia? ABS is fine. Northern Europe and Canada? You need PC.
- What your warranty promises. 5-year warranty on ABS luggage is a financial suicide note.
- What your brand positioning tolerates. PP's surface imperfections are real. If your Instagram is all glossy product shots, stick with PC or ABS.
- Your price point. If you're targeting $49 retail, virgin PC doesn't work — the math simply doesn't close.
One final thing: if a factory quotes you the same price for PC and ABS, one of two things is true. Either they're giving you recycled PC and calling it virgin, or they're inflating the ABS price. Neither is a supplier you want to work with.
