    Shells fail from one dramatic event (a hard drop). Hardware fails from ordinary use - rolling kilometers, extending a handle ten thousand times, cycling a zipper under load. Most warranty claims on luggage are component claims: wheels, handles, locks, zippers. That is why the hardware spec deserves the same rigor as the shell spec.

    Wheels: the first thing to die

    The honest answer on wheels: four-wheel spinners are effortless on smooth airport floors and miserable on cobblestones and curbs; two-wheel rollers are the opposite. Both can be built well or cheaply, and the difference is bearing and tire quality, not the number of wheels.

    What to specify: stage count, tube material (aluminum is standard; steel for heavy-duty), and a pull-rod fatigue cycle target. Ask the factory to test with the case loaded - an empty-case handle test tells you little.

    Locks: TSA is a mechanism, not a brand

    For the US market, TSA-approved locks let screeners open the case with a master key. The approval is about the override mechanism - which is a moving part that can fail. A lock that passes 100 cycles can jam at 500; the cycle count is the spec that matters.

    What to specify: TSA approval for US-bound products, lock type (combination vs key), and a lock cycle target. For the EU, TSA is optional but common; Article B5 covers regional rules.

    Zippers: the silent warranty driver

    Zipper failure is the quiet killer of soft and hybrid luggage. Coil zippers flex and are standard on most cases; molded zippers are smoother and more water-resistant; waterproof coils trade smoothness for sealing. The slider and the pull are where cost and quality separate.
