We get the same question almost every week, usually right after a buyer sees our registration number: "You're registered, so do I need to be?" The honest answer is: maybe. And the maybe is the whole article.

Under VerpackG, the registration obligation belongs to whoever first places packaging filled with goods on the German market. That can be a German importer, a marketplace seller, or a foreign manufacturer shipping directly to German customers — and sometimes more than one party in the same chain.

CLK holds its own registration (DE3237270271866) for its direct German shipments. A buyer importing the same goods and selling them in Germany has a separate obligation to assess. The factory's registration does not transfer to the buyer, and the buyer's registration does not cover the factory's direct sales. Both numbers can be true at once. That's not bureaucracy for its own sake; it's the rule working as designed.

The Functional Rule, Stripped Down

The Three Scenarios That Actually Happen in Luggage

Scenario 1: The factory ships directly to German customers

If CLK sends a suitcase in its shipping carton directly to a German end consumer, CLK is the producer of that shipping and sales packaging — which is exactly why CLK holds registration DE3237270271866.

Scenario 2: A German importer buys FOB and sells in Germany

The importer is the party placing the filled packaging on the German market, so the importer is the producer for those goods. The importer registers and licenses. The factory's registration does not cover this flow.

Scenario 3: A marketplace seller ships from China to Germany

If the seller is the business shipping the goods to the German customer, the seller is the producer — including sellers using Amazon or other marketplaces. German marketplaces now ask sellers for their LUCID registration numbers precisely because of this rule.

What Marketplaces Require

German marketplace and e-commerce platforms have aligned with VerpackG: sellers placing packaging on the German market must provide a LUCID registration number, and the platform verifies it in the register. A missing or mismatched registration blocks or delists listings. The registration number is not optional paperwork — it is an access requirement. Treat it like the product itself: no number, no listing, no sales.
