To the untrained eye, two black wheels look identical. Their molecular performance couldn't be more different.
- TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane): a high-performance elastomer that combines the durability of hard plastic with the elasticity of rubber. It has "dynamic recovery" properties — it absorbs road vibrations instead of transmitting them to the shell. That elasticity is what creates the "silent-run" experience travelers now demand.
- PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride): common in budget-grade luggage. Rigid and cheap. But it has low thermal stability. On hot summer days, a PVC wheel can soften and deform under a 20kg load — leading to "flat-spotting," the rhythmic thumping noise that signals a ruined suitcase.
The Science of Silence: 35dB vs. 70dB+
