If a suitcase's charging circuit resets or its port stops working when a phone transmits nearby, the immunity test is where it gets caught. Why a charging circuit is a victim as well as a transmitter
The same electronics that can radiate noise can also be disturbed by noise from outside. A strong RF field induces currents in the case's internal wiring, and those currents can be interpreted as signals - resetting a controller, glitching a regulator, or making the USB port behave erratically. Immunity testing is the product proving it can live in the RF environment it will actually meet.

How the test runs
- The product operates in its normal mode - for the 1338, charging function active.
- The product sits in the chamber on a non-conductive table, at the height and position the standard defines.
- A generating antenna illuminates one face with the modulated RF field, first vertical then horizontal polarization.
- The frequency sweeps 80 MHz to 1 GHz in small steps, dwelling long enough for the product to respond.
- Every face gets the same treatment - because a product can be vulnerable on one side and fine on another.
- The charging function is monitored the whole time; the report records the criterion achieved per face.
Factory data: Our report shows all six faces and both polarizations with a Pass on every line - twelve exposures in total. That completeness is the point: a report that tests one face is testing a lucky orientation, not a product. When we brief the lab, we insist the charging port and cable are part of the configuration, because the port is where the induced currents actually enter.
Criterion A, again
Under EN IEC 55014-2, radiated immunity requires Criterion A: the apparatus continues to operate as intended during the test, with no degradation below the specified performance level. For a charging case, "operating as intended" means the charging function keeps working while the field is applied. That is what our report documents - not "recovered after the test," but "kept working through it."
Industry need: why this test matters for real travel
Think about where a smart case actually lives: airport terminals with security scanners, train stations with ticket gates, aircraft cabins where a passenger charges a phone next to your case. These are exactly the environments where RF fields are present. Immunity testing is the evidence that the product's electronics will not flinch in the places it is designed to be used - and for EU market access, it is a CE requirement under the EMC Directive.

What is radiated immunity?

What does 3 V/m mean?
The electric field strength the product is exposed to - 3 volts per meter is a realistic indoor level, representing nearby transmitters like phones and Wi-Fi equipment. Higher field strengths are used for harsher environments.
Which faces of a suitcase get tested?
All six - front, rear, left, right, top and bottom - in both vertical and horizontal polarization. A vulnerability on one face is still a vulnerability.
What happens if a product fails radiated immunity?
The electronics get engineering fixes - better filtering, shielding, layout changes - followed by a retest. The failures are usually quiet: a port that stops, a controller that resets.
Is immunity required in the US too?
US market access centers on FCC Part 15 (emissions); immunity is not part of the classic FCC Part 15 equipment authorization, though buyers and markets may still require it. EU CE is where immunity is mandatory.
