    Twenty years ago, luggage had no electronics and EMC was someone else's problem. Today a carry-on can carry a charging circuit, USB ports, and cable routing — and every switching component inside is both a potential transmitter and a potential victim. A charging circuit that radiates noise can interfere with the seat-back screen next to you or the cabin device you plug into. The same circuit can reset or stop working when a nearby phone transmits.

    EMC — electromagnetic compatibility — is the two-sided promise every electronic product makes: it won't interfere with other devices (emissions), and it won't be disrupted by them (immunity). For a USB-charging suitcase sold in Europe, the framework is EN IEC 55014-1 (emissions) and EN IEC 55014-2 (immunity), with CE marking under the EMC Directive 2014/30/EU.     The N/A Lines Are Information, Not Gaps

    The biggest misunderstanding in EMC reports is the N/A column. Every N/A in our report has the same reason: the 1338 is powered by a power bank, not connected to the AC mains. Conducted emissions, harmonics, flicker, fast transients, surge, and voltage dips all test the mains interface — a battery-powered product has no mains interface, so those tests don't apply. That isn't a loophole; it's the correct scope for the product's actual power design.

    What This Report Does NOT Cover

    Honest boundaries, because EMC reports are narrower than they look:

    • It's an EU-market assessment. The US counterpart for unintentional radiators is FCC Part 15 — our lab is FCC-registered, but this report is not an FCC Part 15 report, and the CE mark doesn't replace it.
    • It covers the tested configuration. The 1338 was tested with a specific power bank as the supply. Change the power source or the charging electronics and the results are no longer automatically valid.
    • It doesn't cover radio. If a product includes a wireless module (Bluetooth, GPS, WiFi), radio requirements under RED apply on top of EMC.
    • EMC is one pillar of CE. Full CE marking also needs the manufacturer's EU Declaration of Conformity and other applicable directives.

    What does EMC stand for?

    Electromagnetic compatibility — the ability of an electronic product to operate without interfering with other devices (emissions) and without being disrupted by them (immunity).

    Does every suitcase need an EMC report?

    No — only products with electronics. A purely mechanical suitcase has no EMC obligations. Once you add USB charging, lights, scales, locks, or a motor, the electronics bring EMC (and related) requirements.

    Is EN IEC 55014 the right standard for luggage?

    It's the standard family for household and similar electrical appliances, which is where charging-luggage fits in Europe. The report cites the 2021 editions, which are the current versions.

    Is this report valid for the US market?

    No — it's an EN (European) assessment. US market access for the same electronics is typically handled under FCC Part 15. Ask your factory or lab for the right scope per market.

    What happens if a product fails EMC testing?

    The usual culprits are the charging circuit, cable routing, shielding, and component choice. Fixes are engineering work — better layout, filtering, shielding — followed by a retest. Failing at the lab is normal; shipping without testing is the real risk.
