The best time to qualify a luggage factory is before the order, not after the first quality problem. Ten questions cover the practical ground: factory systems, product testing, materials, compliance support, traceability, QC and documentation. If a supplier cannot answer them with evidence, the answers are the signal.
Ten questions to ask a luggage manufacturer before placing an order
1. What Factory Certifications Do You Have?
Ask for the current certificates and check the holder, scope, sites and validity.
ISO 9001 is the quality baseline; BSCI or SMETA cover social compliance; ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 cover environment and safety. The certificates should match the factory's legal name.
2. What Product Testing Can You Provide?
Ask what performance and chemical testing the factory can produce for the product you are ordering.
Drop impact, handle and trolley fatigue, wheel durability, zipper cycling, and chemical reports for materials. The reports should name your product type and come from a real laboratory.
3. Which Materials Do You Use?
Ask for a material list and declarations for your product.
Shell, lining, wheels, handles, zippers, locks and hardware. For each, ask for the material declaration and the test report behind it.
4. Can You Support Market-Specific Compliance?
Ask how the factory handles requirements for your destination market.
EU GPSR and REACH, US children's product testing and CPC, SABER for Saudi Arabia, UK REACH — the factory should either provide the documentation or work with your laboratories on it.
5. Can You Provide Traceability?
Ask how the factory identifies products, batches and materials.
Traceability means you can connect a shipment to production, materials and tests. Ask to see how batch marking works in practice.
6. How Do You Control Incoming Materials?
Ask how the factory verifies the materials that arrive.
Incoming material inspection — certificates, samples, testing — is where quality problems start or stop. Ask what is checked and how failures are handled.
7. How Do You Manage QC?
Ask about in-process and final inspection.
Who inspects, against what criteria, and how are results recorded? Ask for examples of QC records and defect rates.
8. Can You Provide Inspection Reports?
Ask what inspection evidence comes with the shipment.
Factory inspection reports and third-party inspection reports (before and during shipment) give you independent evidence of the build.
9. Can You Support OEM/ODM Compliance?
Ask how compliance is handled when you are developing a product with the factory.
