Every one of these tests asks the same question: what happens when the AC supply misbehaves? A product that does not connect to the AC supply cannot answer that question, so the standard correctly marks it N/A.
What N/A does NOT mean
Worth saying plainly, because buyers misread this column both ways:
- N/A does not mean "the test was skipped to save money." The scope follows the product's power design, and the applicable tests still run.
- N/A does not mean "this product has no EMC obligations." Radiated emission, ESD and radiated immunity apply to any electronic product and they are in our report.
- N/A does not mean "the product can be connected to the mains later without retesting." Plug a power-bank case into a wall charger during a test and the scope changes.
The power-bank design is the story
The 1338 is powered by a removable power bank - the Times PPADM65-S in the report's support-unit list. That design choice is worth understanding, because it drives both the EMC scope and the travel rules:
- EMC scope: battery power removes the mains tests, exactly as described above.
- Airline rules: a removable battery is the compliant shape for travel - non-removable batteries are heavily restricted in checked baggage (Article B5 covers this in full).
- Practicality: the user can remove the power bank for charging or for the flight, and the case keeps working as a normal suitcase when the electronics are out.
Factory data: When we designed the 1338, the removable power bank was a deliberate choice, not an accident. It kept the EMC scope honest (no mains interface), it keeps the product airline-friendly, and it lets the electronics be serviced without tearing the case apart. The report's N/A lines are the documentation of that design decision.
What buyers should check about the N/A lines
- The power supply matches your product - the report should state the supply (ours says "power supply by power bank").
- The N/A reasons make sense - every N/A line should trace to the same cause: no mains interface.
- The applicable tests are present - radiated emission, ESD, radiated immunity should not be N/A on an electronic product.
- The tested configuration matches what you will sell - including the power bank model and the charging function.
FAQ
Why does my factory's EMC report have N/A on most tests?
Because the product is battery-powered and has no AC mains interface. The N/A lines reflect the power design, not missing work - check that the applicable tests (radiated emission, ESD, immunity) are present and passed.
Is a battery-powered product easier to certify?
In one sense, yes - it avoids the entire mains test family. But it still must pass the radiated and immunity tests, and the battery itself brings separate transport and safety considerations.
Can I plug the 1338 into a wall charger and keep the report valid?
No. The report covers the tested configuration - power supplied by the power bank. A different supply configuration needs its own assessment.
Do I need a separate battery certification?
The battery and its transport rules (UN 38.3, airline policies) are separate from the EMC report. Ask your factory or supplier for the battery documentation alongside the EMC scope.
What tests would apply if my product had a mains adapter?
A mains-powered variant would need the conducted emission, harmonics, flicker, EFT, surge and dips tests that are N/A here - a different scope, a different report.
How do I know the N/A lines are legitimate and not skipped tests?
Look for the supply statement in the report and the same cause behind every N/A. If the report says battery-powered, the mains tests should be N/A; if it claims mains compatibility, they cannot be.
