When a buyer asks us "is the lock TSA approved?", the honest answer starts with a document — and I've had to walk more than one buyer through what that document actually is.

Travel Sentry Approved is the license behind TSA-recognized locks. A luggage manufacturer licensed under the program may use the Travel Sentry marks on locks that TSA screeners can open with their master tools instead of cutting.

What the License Proves

The license names three things, and the third one is the one buyers should memorize:

Why the Red Diamond Matters

The red diamond is the visual signal to screeners: this lock can be opened with the TSA master key or tool, so it doesn't need to be cut. A lock without the recognition risks being cut open during inspection.

For US-bound luggage, the red diamond is therefore a market-access feature, not decoration. It's the reason brands and retailers ask for Travel Sentry evidence in the first place.

What This License Does NOT Mean

Honest boundaries, because every one of these has caused a misunderstanding somewhere:

It is a trademark license, not a safety certificate.
It does not test shell strength, chemicals or flammability — those are other documents in this series.
It licenses the manufacturer, not every lock automatically. The Travel Sentry Approved locks used on CLK products carry the program's approval; the license governs the use of the marks.
It expires. The 2026 license runs to December 31, 2026 — renewal is part of staying compliant (Article J8).
It is not a global pass. Travel Sentry recognition is built around US TSA procedures; other markets have their own lock and security frameworks.
