    The 8 Tests That Decide If Your Luggage Survives

    Eight tests separate luggage that survives real travel from luggage that looks fine in photos: drop impact, roller endurance, pull-rod fatigue, wheel function, lock cycles, zipper cycles, load and compression, and environmental checks. None of them is optional for a brand that sells to people who check bags. A factory that cannot show you test parameters and reports is telling you how it treats quality - before you sign.

    Why testing decides brand survival

    The warranty claim is the most expensive customer interaction a luggage brand has. The product costs money to replace, the shipping costs more, and the review that follows costs trust. Testing is the cheapest warranty claim you will never have.     Test 1: Drop impact

    Hard-shell luggage fails in one of three ways on impact: the shell cracks, the corner shatters, or the hinge area splits. The test drops the loaded case from roughly 1 meter onto a hard surface, repeating on corners, edges and faces. What a pass looks like: the shell may dent (and PC should visibly recover), but there are no cracks through the wall and the case still opens and closes.

    Test 2: Roller endurance

    Wheels are the first thing to die on real luggage. The test loads the case to its rated weight and rolls it over a track or treadmill for kilometers - enough distance to expose bad bearings, soft tires and weak axle mounts. What a pass looks like: the wheels still roll straight, the tires have not chunked, and the base has not cracked.

    Test 3: Pull-rod fatigue

    The telescoping handle is a mechanical system with a lifespan. The test extends and retracts it hundreds to thousands of times under load. What a pass looks like: no collapse under rated load, no jamming, no looseness beyond tolerance.

    Test 4: Wheel function and brake

    Spinner wheels with brakes are common on premium cases. The test cycles the brake lock and checks rolling stability. What a pass looks like: the brake holds the case on a slope, and the wheels do not seize or rattle after the cycle.

    Test 5: Lock cycles

    TSA locks are mechanical assemblies with springs and tumblers that wear. The test cycles the lock hundreds of times. What a pass looks like: the mechanism opens every time with the combination or key, and the TSA override still functions.

    Test 6: Zipper cycles

    A zipper under load separates when the slider or track fails. The test opens and closes the case repeatedly with contents and tension. What a pass looks like: no separation, no slider detachment, no fabric catch.

    Test 7: Load and compression

    Checked bags get stacked and compressed. The test applies static load to the case and to the shipping carton. What a pass looks like: the shell does not permanently deform, and the carton stack does not crush the cases underneath.

    Test 8: Environmental and chemical

    Temperature cycling, humidity and chemical exposure (cleaning agents, airport fluids) can degrade materials quietly. Material screening for restricted substances (REACH in the EU, plus market-specific rules) is part of this test. What a pass looks like: no cracking after thermal cycling, no odor or degradation, and a compliance report covering your target market.

    Factory data: Our qualification process combines in-line QC with batch sampling and a final inspection before loading. Across our production, the shipped-batch qualification rate is 98%. The remaining 2% is why after-sales exists - and why after-sales should be in your contract, not assumed.

    How to read a test report

    1. Check the identity: the report must name your factory and product, not be a generic certificate.
    2. Check the parameters: were the drops the height and count you agreed? Was the roller distance meaningful?
    3. Check the sample size: one case tested is a demonstration; a batch sample is data.
    4. Check the date: reports older than 12 months tell you little about current production.
    5. Check the lab: third-party reports (SGS, TUV, Intertek and similar) carry more weight than in-house numbers, though in-house data is still useful for trend.

    FAQ

    Which tests are mandatory for my market?

    At minimum, drop, roller, pull-rod and lock tests for any hard-shell product. Add environmental and chemical screening for the EU (REACH/RoHS expectations) and verify TSA lock approval for the US. Children's luggage adds safety standards - covered in Article B8.

    Do I need third-party testing or is the factory's test enough?

    For a first order, use a third-party inspection before shipment and keep the factory's in-house reports for trend. For repeat orders, factory reports plus periodic third-party audits strike a reasonable balance.

    Can cheap luggage pass these tests?

    Some tests, yes - a simple drop test is passable at low cost. The failures show up in endurance tests (roller, pull-rod, zipper cycles), which is why you should insist on cycle counts, not just "tested."

    How do I add testing to my contract?

    Write the parameters into the specification: drop height and count, roller distance, cycle counts, and the inspection standard (AQL). A factory that argues about writing tests down is telling you something.

    What happens if a test fails before shipment?

    The correct process is quarantine, root-cause analysis, correction and retest - not shipping anyway. Agree on this workflow in writing, including who pays for rework when the cause is a spec change versus a production defect.
