In the sample room I'll hand you a piece of our lining fabric and you can feel it's different from the shell next to it. That difference matters more than you'd think, because "recycled lining" is a component claim, not a product claim.

It means the lining material is sourced from certified recycled content — in our program, recycled post-consumer polyester from a GRS-certified supplier. It says nothing about the shell, the wheels, the hardware, or anything else in the suitcase. Nothing.

The GRS chain makes the material claim verifiable. The scope of the claim is what keeps it honest.

What the Certified Material Is

Our supplier's GRS scope certificate (ITS-A11770-GRS-01908400) covers woven fabrics made with recycled post-consumer polyester. The certificate lists two options: 100% recycled polyester, and a 50% recycled / 50% conventional blend.

Behind the fabric, three facts do the heavy lifting:

It comes from recycled PET sources, not virgin resin.
It carries a chain of custody from input to fabric.
It is one component in a suitcase that contains many materials.

That last bullet is the one that keeps getting ignored. A suitcase is a dozen materials in a shared shell. One recycled component does not make the product recycled.

The ladder is the difference between a defensible claim and a misleading one. Most brands I talk to want to skip to the top rung. The evidence only reaches the middle.

From Our Side of the Factory

When we brief brands on recycled lining, we write the claim on the material: "lining made with GRS-certified recycled polyester." It's narrower than marketing would like. I'll admit the temptation — "recycled suitcase" sells better than "recycled lining" — but a narrow, verifiable claim survives scrutiny, and a broad claim built on one component doesn't.

What Buyers Should Specify

The material claim — lining with recycled polyester, not "recycled product."
The content level — 100% recycled or a defined blend (the certificate lists both).
The evidence — current SC plus TC covering the shipment.
The label language — keep it to the component the evidence supports.
