    Why the lead limit exists

    Lead is a neurotoxin, and children are the most vulnerable population because their bodies absorb it more readily during development. The CPSIA of 2008 cut the allowable lead in children's products from 600 ppm to 100 ppm for accessible parts, with an even tighter 90 ppm for paint and coatings. The limits are not marketing targets; they are legal floors, and they apply to every accessible part of a children's product - including the hardware on a suitcase.

    Where lead hides in luggage

    Lead does not appear in a clean PC shell. It shows up in the parts nobody photographs:

    • Metal zippers and sliders - historically the most common source, from alloys and plating.
    • Buckles, rivets and snap hardware - small metal parts with plating.
    • Pigments and coatings - especially bright or metallic finishes on plastic or fabric.
    • PVC and vinyl components - older stabilizers could contain lead.
    • Printed graphics - large printed surfaces are where coatings get checked.

    This is exactly why the lab in our report tested components separately: the metal zipper head was assessed on its own, and it measured 56 mg/kg while the plastic and fabric parts came back N.D. A report that tests "the suitcase" as one blob cannot tell you which part is the risk.

    How the test works (the ICP-OES line)

    The method is worth understanding at a basic level because it explains the abbreviations:

    1. The lab cuts and weighs the sample component.
    2. The sample is digested in acid, usually with microwave or hotplate digestion, turning the material into a measurable solution.
    3. The solution runs through an ICP-OES - Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer - which vaporizes the sample and measures the light each element emits.
    4. The result is compared to the limit and to the MDL - Method Detection Limit, the smallest amount the instrument can reliably measure.

    Factory data: Our report lists an MDL of 10 mg/kg for the lead methods. That number matters: when a result says N.D., it does not mean "zero lead"; it means "below 10 mg/kg, the instrument's floor." N.D. with a stated MDL is honest and standard. A report that claims "0 lead" without an MDL is the first sign of a document that was written to impress, not to inform.

    Retailers and marketplaces do not usually re-test every shipment, but they do audit documentation, and importers carry the legal responsibility for what crosses the border. A single non-compliant component can sink a listing, trigger a recall, and end a retail relationship. Lead compliance is not a marketing checkbox; it is the difference between a defensible product and a liability.

    Does passing lead testing cover other heavy metals?
