    But 40% is still a lot. PC, ABS, and aluminum frame construction each have distinct production processes, performance profiles, and cost structures, and those differences directly shape your market positioning, your margins, and your customer's experience. This guide breaks down the real-world differences between the three, from the factory floor perspective, so the material you choose is a decision and not a default.

    ABS — the cost-effective thermoplastic.

    ABS has dominated entry-level and mid-range luggage for decades. Mature production processes, lower material cost, rigid structure for good support. It handles basic colors and simple textures and is available from many suppliers. It remains the default for supermarket chains, discount retailers, and budget-conscious e-commerce sellers. The catch: it needs careful thickness design to stay durable under stress.

    Aluminum frame — the premium structural solution.

    Aluminum frame luggage typically pairs PC or ABS shells with an aluminum frame structure, or goes full aluminum for ultra-premium positioning. Exceptional structural strength, compression resistance, and a visible frame that adds prestige and perceived value. It's the choice for business travel and executive markets — and it demands precision manufacturing and assembly.

    Durability — What Survives the Carousel

    Durability is the factor that hits your warranty claims and your brand reputation directly.

    PC: flexibility is its superpower. Drop a PC suitcase and the shell flexes, absorbs the kinetic energy, and recovers. That prevents the cracks and splits that plague more rigid materials. Lower warranty claim rates than ABS. A PC case dropped from a luggage carousel typically shows minimal damage; an ABS case can crack at stress points.

    ABS: more rigid, which gives good compression resistance but reduces impact absorption.     • ABS: the most straightforward — stable, predictable forming, standard injection molding equipment, lower skill requirements, consistent quality with proper controls, many suppliers globally. Implication: competitive pricing, but careful vetting is required because quality consistency varies.
    • PC: more sophisticated — precise temperature control, higher-quality molds, experienced operators and quality technicians, stricter environmental controls, advanced monitoring. Fewer manufacturers can do it well, so supplier selection is more critical and quality variation is more common among less experienced producers.
    • Aluminum frame: the highest sophistication — precision cutting and machining, riveting expertise, tight tolerance control, seal and waterproofing work, experienced assembly technicians, rigorous multi-stage QC. Very few manufacturers do this consistently, which keeps prices high but also protects quality. It's a genuine competitive differentiator for premium manufacturers.
