    A compliance report is not only about chemicals - the physical tests are where a suitcase proves it can survive being a suitcase. The mechanical scope on our Model 8404 report covers tensile strength (ASTM D882), tear strength (ASTM D1004) and zipper endurance (QB/T 2173, 500 open-close cycles), all against client-specified limits that go beyond what the law demands.     Why physics belongs in a compliance report

    A children's product rule exists to protect a user; durability exists to keep the product safe while it is used. A strap that tears under load, a zipper that splits and exposes contents, a handle that fails mid-trip - these are safety failures even when every chemical test passes. That is why serious programs pair chemical compliance with mechanical testing, and why buyers should treat a report that only covers chemistry as incomplete for luggage.

    The warp and weft directions are tested separately because fabric is woven in two directions and behaves differently in each. Our numbers are roughly five to nine times the client-specified floors - which is exactly the point of setting limits above the legal minimum.

    What "client-specified limit" means

    This is the part worth being precise about. The ≥15 MPa tensile floor and ≥5 N tear floor are not US federal requirements - they are our own technical requirements, agreed with the client and written into the test scope. The law sets a compliance floor; a factory that cares about durability sets its own bar above it and documents the result. When you see "client's limit" in a report, it means somebody chose a higher standard on purpose. That is a signal about how the factory treats quality, and it is exactly the kind of detail that separates a real report from a generic template.

    How the tests run

    • Tensile (ASTM D882): a strip of material is pulled until it breaks; the force and cross-section give the strength in MPa. It answers "how hard can you pull before it gives?"
    • Tear (ASTM D1004): a notched specimen is pulled so the tear propagates; the peak force in newtons measures tear resistance. It answers "once it starts tearing, how fast does it fail?"
    • Zipper (QB/T 2173): the zipper is opened and closed under a defined load for a set number of cycles - 500 in our scope - with a pass criteria of no malfunctions. The standard's load table sizes the test force by zipper model.

    Factory data: The load table in our report is worth a second look - it maps test forces to zipper models (F1 from 7 to 30 N and F2 from 5 to 23 N depending on the zipper number). A zipper test is only meaningful if the load matches the zipper you actually use. When we brief the lab, we specify the real zipper on the production unit, not a generic sample.

    What buyers should look for

    • Component-level results - the tested fabric and zipper should match production.
    • Both directions - warp and weft, not one number.
    • The limit and where it came from - legal requirement or client-specified quality floor.
    • Cycle counts - 500 cycles says more than "tested."
    • The standard versions - ASTM D882-18, D1004-13, QB/T 2173-2014 are dated for a reason.

    Industry need: durability is a market-access question

    Retailers and marketplace sellers rarely ask for tensile data - until a product fails and the reviews arrive. Durability testing is the cheapest way to avoid the most expensive customer interaction a brand has: the one where the product breaks. It also feeds directly into the product brief: knowing your fabric tears at 48 N tells your team where the margin is and where a lighter material can save cost without risk.

    Are tensile and tear tests required by US law for luggage?

    Not as federal requirements - the mechanical tests in our report are client-specified technical requirements. US law sets the chemical and flammability floors; durability bars are a quality decision, which is why we document ours.

    What is the difference between tensile and tear strength?

    Tensile measures resistance to being pulled apart from whole material; tear measures resistance to a tear that has already started. Both matter because a suitcase strap fails either way.

    Why test warp and weft separately?

    Woven fabric behaves differently along and across its construction. One direction can be strong while the other is weak, so a single number hides the weaker one.

    What does QB/T 2173-2014 cover?

    It is the zipper test standard used in our report, including load sizing by zipper model and endurance cycling. The 500-cycle open-close requirement in our scope is the client-specified bar.

    Do I need to retest for every production batch?

    Chemical compliance typically relies on material verification; mechanical durability should be confirmed when materials, construction or suppliers change. Batch sampling during production covers the drift between tests.

    How do I add durability limits to my factory brief?

    Write the numbers into the spec: tensile and tear floors, zipper cycle count, and the standard versions. A factory that argues about writing limits down is telling you its quality story is verbal.
