The One Feature That Actually Matters: The AirTag Pocket
If you build luggage for the US or EU market in 2027 and your carry-on doesn't have an AirTag pocket, you're leaving share on the table. It's not even close.
Here's why: airlines lost 2% of checked bags globally in 2025 — and the percentage is rising as traffic grows faster than airport infrastructure. Travelers are traumatized. A $29 AirTag that tells them their bag is on the tarmac is the single most-wanted luggage feature in consumer surveys.
The good news for importers: an AirTag pocket costs almost nothing — $0.20–0.50 in fabric, a zipper, and a small molded pocket. It's not "smart luggage." It's a $0.40 insurance policy that sells.
The spec detail that matters: the pocket needs a clear window or a marked zipper position so the AirTag's signal isn't fully shielded by the shell. Position it in the lining, not inside a metal frame section. Then test signal strength through the assembled suitcase. That last step is the difference between a feature that works and a feature that generates returns — I've seen both outcomes come off the same line.
Why Battery Luggage Failed (and Still Will)
The 2017 airline ban wasn't a regulatory overreaction. It was physics. Lithium batteries in cargo holds are a fire risk airlines decided they didn't want to carry. The ban on removable batteries killed the "self-charging suitcase" category overnight.

The e-ink luggage tag is the only smart feature with genuine momentum. Why it's different:
- No battery in the traditional sense — e-ink displays hold an image with zero power; only the refresh requires energy.
- Regulators are warming up: IATA has been piloting digital bag tags for years, and several major airlines now accept them alongside paper.
- It's a branding surface — the tag doubles as a marketing display that owners can customize.
The importer's math: e-ink tags add $8–15 to FOB. At a $129+ retail price point, that's a viable premium — if your brand can communicate the value. At a $59 price point, it's a margin killer. Know which one you're building.
What "Smart" Actually Means for Your Supply Chain
Even "simple" smart features change your manufacturing and QC in four ways: new components to source and qualify, new assembly steps with their own failure modes, new documentation (UN38.3, app certification where it applies), and new after-sales questions from consumers who expect the electronics to behave like a phone.
Here's how I'd decide, based on your position: if you're a volume importer at a value price point, skip the electronics and put the budget into wheels and zippers. If you're a premium brand, add the AirTag pocket as standard and treat e-ink as an option. Either way, do not touch built-in batteries.
The pattern to notice: the smart features that survived are the ones that don't need a battery. The ones that died all needed one. Build around that rule and you can't go far wrong.
